Jourdanton Community Library

Director's Message

Your Library Director Welcomes You

Welcome to the Jourdanton Community Library.  We are pleased to have you visit.

Our library was established in 1976 by a group of dedicated citizens.  They met with the Jourdanton City Council and the City Council appointed a library board and offered the old City Hall to be used as a library.  The City agreed to pay the utilities on the building.  No other financial support was given at that time.  The group got busy and got donations and the library opened for business on December 8, 1976.

In 1977 the City of Jourdanton agreed to build a new library.  The library had to shut down for several months as the old building was torn down and replaced with a new building to house the library, municipal court and police department.

The new library opened in the fall of 1978.  The library was staffed by volunteers and mostly funded by donations.

On December 20, 1982 the City Council of Jourdanton voted to make the library a city department and to provide funds for the library operation.

By 1989 the library had outgrown their space.  The police department and municipal court were moved to a new location.  The library expanded into their space.

The library continued to grow and more space was needed.  In the meantime the Jourdanton Civic Center had been outgrown as well.

In July 1996 another very dedicated group from the Jourdanton Chamber of Commerce and Friends of the Library got together and formed a non-profit group call the Jourdanton Library and Community Center Foundation, Inc.  The purpose of this group was to raise funds to building a new library and community center for the citizens of Jourdanton.  They met with the Jourdanton City Council who agreed to accept the facility and to maintain it after it was built.

In four years and ten months the JLCC Foundation raised the money to build the new library and community center and to furnish it.  The support of the community was overwhelming.

The JLCC foundation broke ground in August 2000.  The building was completed and moved into in September 2001.

The JLCC Foundation members were Jim Andrus, Wayne Schuchart, Larry Pryor, Rita Vyvlecka, Tom Hon, Patsy Schuchart, Sara Darby, Marty Pryor, Annie De La O, Karen Rakowitz and Librarian Dorothy Manning.

As library usage continues to grow, it won't be too long before we will need to start looking at an expansion project. We feel confident  that our community will be there to support us when that time comes.
